Young Writers
Young Writers is another Duke-sponsored summer program that takes place on East. The Young Writers used to actually be young, but many are now just as old as TIPsters, and older (it goes from 6th to 11th grade). They are housed in Wilson dorm, next to the Union during Term 2.
[edit] Rivalry
The majority of the Young Writers know nothing of the "rivalry" between TIP and their program. When a Young Writer is asked what camp they attend, they invariably reply back proudly: "DYWC".
Sam and Daag of the Trinity told a story in which they created the rivalry between TIPsters and Young Writers. In their account, the rivalry was started thus: the pair were trying to stack saltshakers in the Union dining hall in 1998 term 1. They made a stack of 20, and left in triumph. While leaving, they heard the following sounds (reenacted exactly by Sam at TIP Lore 2004, Term II):
sksksksksksk (scuttling)... AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!... BOOOOOOOOMMMMMM... (CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH! CRASH!)...
And so, the rivalry was born.
This loathing, er, rivalry, was intensified when during the course of unprecedented horrors, Young Writers entered the fourth year circle at the last dance at East Term 1 2006. Tensions grew to fever-pitch, but, alas, all of the Young Writers escaped unscathed. Strangely enough, the many of the Young Writers looked intensely confused upon finding themselves on Circle Quad. From the library steps, one could observe the Young Writers milling about, looking frequently at the foreboding TIPsters. One Young Writer in particular seemed extremely befuddled. For 10 minutes, he would walk two feet in one direction, look around, and then walk two feet in the other direction. Why? Who knows: he was a Young Writer.
The Young Writers publish a digital news papers, it is full of gold, about how much they hate TiP. It should be noted that their writings reflect just how stupid they are about TiP. [1]
Some Young Writers, though, seem to be impressed by TIP, specifically East Term 2. In 2004, a group of female Young Writers approached Daag/Mark's RAG while they were at Get Crunk Night on 9th Street. Peter Sloan obliged and answered their questions about the origins and traditions surrounding the Llama.
It should also be noted that the Young Writers scoop ice cream at a speed that is so incredibly slow it blows the mind.
In East Term II 2006, after OSC Sam kidnapped the Llama he offered to give it back if the TIPsters made an offering of a Young Writer. A female Young Writer was indeed captured but was freed shortly afterwards by a Young Writer counselor.
Term II 2009, a Young Writer interviewed a group of TIPsters including Steph Connor, Aaron Shinn, Cat Hollander, Emily Fry, Teo Ene, and others. She asked questions like "What's with all the frisbees?" (To which Cat yelled "Ultimate Frisbee is God!), and "Why do you guys hate us?" (To which the TIPsters told the salt-and-pepper story). Here is the Link to the news story that got written from that interview, [2]
There has also been numerous occasions in which these Young Writers have stolen frisbees from the Tipsters. Much antagonism has been created due to this, but the Young Writers have yet to own up to the fact.
In East Term I 2010, a group of bored TiPsters sitting on a bench during lunch told the seals in warm Crisco joke to a group of Young Writers on their way to The Union. They didn't get it at all and stared at them in confusion and weirded-outness (which is definitely a real word, despite what the spell check is telling me.) It was extremely amusing to see their unfriendliness manifested. Another of the days, the same group of TiPsters sang "Be A Man" from Mulan in loud, off-key voices. The Young Writers were very, very confused and befuddled... but aren't they always?
In East Term I 2011, a group of Young Writers invaded en masse the brown side of the Union Marketplace steps which had been accorded to the Tipsters the night before, though their motives were unclear it appeared as though they were trying to take an inflatable animal that was highly valued by the TiPsters (Squiggles Leprechaun Lastname). It was also declared in this Term that it is the ultimate goal of TiPsters to eat Young Writers for breakfast.
CRAM IT TIPSTERS. ITS COMMENTS LIKE THAT THAT STARTED THE HOLOCAUST. - DYWC Camper P.S- Explain that Emo Monday crap for me. I'd like to hear that justification. -you poor misled confused child, you know nothing ^Get off of our website. You're just jealous Young Writers aren't smart enough nor do they have enough swag to make their own wiki.
[edit] The Infiltration
In East Term 2 2010, two fourth-years named Robert Blackwell and Tyler Varnadore decided that their mandatory fun was not actually fun. They snuck out of their activity and came upon a procession of Young Writers. Tyler, who later was expelled from TiP for socializing after-hours, decided that they should follow them in order to "find their lair". After hiding their conspicuous lanyards, they joined the ranks and proceeded into the unknown.
It turned out to be the Young Writer's last night, so they all went into an auditorium to watch slide shows and such. Robert and Tyler remained undetected and slipped into the back row. After it was over and everyone started to leave, a Young Writer supervisor lady (we'll call her an RC) held up a lanyard that someone lost. Tyler said to Robert "dude you should get that", so Robert took the lanyard, assuming the identity of an innocent Young Writer by the name of Joseph Duffield.
They followed the Young Writers to their air-conditioned dorms and set out to find Joseph Duffield. Many Young Writers sat in lame guitar circles and sang songs about writing, and others hugged and cried. Eventually, Robert and Tyler heard someone asking if anyone could come with him to the auditorium to get his lanyard. Robert kindly volunteered, but Joseph Duffield became suspicious because he had never seen them before. Robert and Tyler convinced Joseph that they were good friends and they should bond on the last night. So they decided to take pictures "for the memories man." There is a picture on Tyler's phone of Joseph Duffield standing with Robert. Who is still wearing his lanyard. Soon, Joseph and his writer friends realized that Robert was not who he said he was. Robert gave Joseph Duffield his lanyard and he and Tyler began to make their escape. The Young Writers followed them, and ensuing shouts of "Tipsters!" followed. They tattled to an "RC" who started to chase after Robert and Tyler, who shouted "We're smarter than you!" and ran off. The End
