Official TIP Songs

From the unofficial Duke TIP Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

There are six canonical TIP songs and one with questionable status. The songs are meant to be played at every dance. Though legendary RC Peter Sloan claims that "The Last Saskatchewan Pirate" is officially a TIP song, it was never officially added to the list at a TIP dance. This may change in the near future.

As different campuses have different traditions, the official TIP songs vary from campus to campus and even from term to term. There are no true 'official' songs which are universally acknowledged, save for possibly American Pie by Don McLean, which is played at all TIP campuses, no matter what.

[edit] The Six Official Songs and the Greatest of the Unofficial

"The Last Saskatchewan Pirate" by Captain Tractor is widely loved by TIPsters, but no dance-master or official has ever mandated it as an Official TIP song. Claims to the contrary should be disregarded.

"Yatta" and "The Last Saskatchewan Pirate" are still relatively new in the TiP universe. Yatta has arguably the most epic of origins.

NOTE: Breakfast at Tiffany's is not recognized as a TiP song at Duke East.

[edit] Songs That Came Close to Canonical Status

[edit] Traditional Slide Show Songs

  • Carolina on My Mind - James Taylor
  • Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) - Green Day

[edit] Duke East Songs

Duke East, always being the most traditional campus, ALWAYS plays the six official TIP songs, and "The Last Saskatchewan Pirate." In addition, the following songs have become well known in recent years:

  • Donk - Soulja Boy
  • Like A Boss - The Lonely Island
  • I'm On A Boat - The Lonely Island (feat. T-Pain)
  • I Want it That Way - The Backstreet Boys
  • Don't Stop Believin' - Journey
  • I Love College - Asher Roth
  • Californication - Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • Show Me Your Genitals/E=MC Vagina - Jon Lajoie
  • Everytime We Touch - Cascada
  • Sandstorm - Darude
  • Always - Erasure
  • Here's to the Night - Eve 6
  • Vamos a la Playa- Loona
  • Home- Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeroes.

EDIT: The bulleted list of songs above has been no longer playing from an undetermined point in time. These type of songs come as they come out and fade away pretty fast, and so this list should not be taken very seriously. However, the statements above it are true.

[edit] Appalachian State Songs

ASU/UGA

  • American Pie - Don McLean
  • Save Tonight - Eagle Eye Cherry
  • Breakfast at Tiffany's - Deep Blue Something

'Good Riddance' by Green Day is also sometimes considered an ASU TIPsong.

(They no longer play any of the above. These songs are now refused by the RC's.) Ummmmm. Actually they played American Pie at the last two dances of the most recent term this summer at ASU (2011) Term 2

[edit] University of Georgia Songs

At UGA's first ever TIP term, Term I 2009, the 'official' TIP songs became a mix of those at several campuses, largely ASU, as many of the UGA Tipsters come from ASU:

  • American Pie – Don McLean
  • Breakfast at Tiffany’s – Deep Blue Something
  • Save Tonight – Eagle Eye Cherry
  • It’s The End of the World as We Know It – R.E.M.
  • Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) – Green Day
  • Time Warp - Rocky Horror Picture Show
  • I Want It That Way - Backstreet Boys (Term II only)
  • Electric Feel - MGMT (Term II only)
  • Wonderwall - Oasis (Both Terms)
  • Hallelujah (Both Terms)

Also, this campus is where TiP-Radio started.

[edit] Duke West Songs

As of Duke West 2008, there are no guaranteed songs. Staff play whatever songs they feel like, regardless of tradition. Most of the time the Six Official are played, but sometimes are not. Except maybe "Crank Dat" and "Get Low". Those might just be guaranteed.

As of Duke West 2010, and their observations, these songs might be guaranteed:

  • American Pie - Don McLean: It isn't TIP without it. Except when it rains out before time comes to. See the last dance.
  • It's the End of the World As We Know It (and I Feel Fine) - R.E.M.: TiPsters are to run in full circles around the dance area. They probably play it believe that we need our exercise!
  • Time Warp - Rocky Horror Picture Show: 4th years stood on the Sigma Nu bench in Kilgo Quad for this song in '09. In '10, the dances were moved to the quad where we met for classes, and the students merely did it in lines.
  • Poker Face - Lady Gaga: To torture us with. It's popular.
  • Sandstorm - Darude: Blasted in order to cause an actual sandstorm on the quad by initiating mosh pitting. It was cut early for the first time in West history in '09, due to injuries (the pit was on concrete in not-Kilgo quad).
  • Limbo - Played at the first dance of '09 and '10, Luau theme. Also played during Quadfest, and assumable at least one a term at either or both events.
  • Fire Burning - Sean Kingston: Played at every dance since its rise as a hit. During Term II, 4th year members of the Blob danced the Macarena to this song because they could. This song was notably not played at any dance in '10
  • Alejandro by Lady Gaga. (it helps if there is an Alejandro at the camp. There will be a circle formed around him.)

Other more-or-less likely songs, most with accompanying dance routines:

  • The Cha Cha Slide (also known as the Casper Slide) - DJ Casper
  • Macarena - Los del Río and Fangoria
  • Cupid Shuffle - Cupid

[edit] Texas A&M Songs

There are 5 official songs played at the end of every dance at Texas A&M. The number is up from the original 4 played in previous years, because RLC Lizzy made an executive decision in 2010 to add the Celebration Remix of Wavin' Flag by K'naan (as made famous by the World Cup) to the official song lineup. These 5 songs must be played at the end of every dance, in the specific order. Other semi-official songs may be played throughout the dance, in any order.

[edit] Official

  • Wavin' Flag (Celebration Remix) - K'naan
  • We Bleed Maroon - Granger Smith
  • It’s The End of the World as We Know It – R.E.M.
  • American Pie - Don McLean
  • Time Warp - Rocky Horror Picture Show
  • The Fields Of Athenry- Dropkick Murphys (This is sanctioned by the 1FH's)

[edit] Semi Official

  • Every Time We Touch - Cascada
  • Ohio (Come Back to Texas) - Bowling For Soup
  • All We Do Is Win - DJ Khaled
  • Over - Drake
  • All The Small Things - blink-182
  • Billionaire - Travie McCoy feat. Bruno Mars
  • I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing - Aerosmith
  • Friday - Rebecca Black
  • I Love Tip - Boytoyz (A dramatic improvement of the song "I Love College")

[edit] Davidson Songs

Davidson also plays many of the Official TIP canons, since we all know Davidson is prep for Duke traditions.

2010 These songs are a mix, from all of the dances, to summerfest, to TIPsync.

  • All I Do Is Win- DJ Kahled
  • Dynamite- Taio Cruz
  • You Belong With Me- Taylor Swift
  • Time Warp- Rocky Horror Picture Show
  • Bulletproof- La Roux
  • Yeah Toast!- Lawrence and Nate

2011 (term 2)

  • Barbara Streisand- but you must, must, must must, MUST replace the whole "Barbara Streisand" part with "Daniel Bullock"- OR ELSE!!
  • Friday (ironically, of course)
  • Baby (same as above, a protest was put in place by freezing in unison)
  • Dinamite
  • Cha-Cha Slide
  • John Wall
  • "Forget" you (though nobody sings it that way)
  • Everytime We Touch
  • Wobble
  • Bring 'em Out!!!!!
