Section 1 of the official 2006 TIP booklet (Heading "residential life at Duke TIP", subheading "housing") says:

"Due to limited housing availability on college campuses in the summer, some of our students may have to live on floors in their residence halls with members of the opposite sex; however the students will have adult supervision, will live in same sex residential groups, will use same sex bathroom facilities, and will only be allowed to have same sex visitors in their rooms."

Although rumors say that other campuses have had a similar rule in effect in the past, this is a general statement that seems to apply to all campuses. Clearly this is a bad development, not only for TIP, but for the world. Let me explain.

TIP has always been a place for nerds to break out of their shell. They find peers, fun (both mandatory and un-mandatory), and if they're lucky, love.

Now, we all know that nerds go on to rule the world. Clearly we all want our world-ruling nerds to be balanced, happy people. TIP has provided a way for these nerds to become balanced, happy people who are confident in their nerdiness. However, as TIP grows stricter and stricter, one must wonder how much these nerds will be able to take before they do not become confident and satisfied.

I, for one, want my world-ruling nerds to be happy. Who wants a bunch of bitter, unhappy nerds sitting on top of our nuclear weapons?

I'm not even going to begin on how redundant this rule is. I'll only say that it's rediculous to make a rule that only punishes the well-behaved kids. They outlawed closed doors ages ago; what does this rule do that the first one doesn't?

Rumors are circulating about what brought about this change in rule; being a West tipster, I only know that lots of people were kicked out of West this last year. Term II there was a person caught in a person of the opposite sex's room after hours. I can only guess that TIP has deemed us unworthy of the priviledge of rooms.

(Actually, according to an ASU TIPster, this rule was put into effect at ASU in 2005. Additionally, they were told not to complain as the new visitation policy would be implemented at all campuses as of 2006.)

I leave you with a promise: the West 4th years will not go down in history as the 4th years who did nothing. Something will happen. As fourth years, we have a responsibility. And I also promise that this wiki will hear about it.

The separate sexes rule caused a decline in TIPgasms during 2006.

In a sad, sad, turn of events at the beginning of Term I 2006, the visitation policy was modified to prevent the entering of a person's room by a person of the opposite gender. Therefore, people just PDA out in the hall. Due to this form of rebellion, many RAs are now against this policy. Many TIPsters choose to make out, etc. or just hang out in mobs in the hall, especially when one of their friends of the opposite gender has air conditioning. A notable example of this occurred at East Term 2 2006, on the second floor of Giles, in Andrew's hall. Hall sports were subsequently invented, such as Mini Ultimate, Teach Guys How To Kiss/Dance, Steal Mitch's iPod and Laugh, and Candy Wars. And yes, sadly, long live those who ignored it, for persons of the same gender, the Four feet on the floor rule remains in effect.

Rebellion against this new policy has been present but quiet and in small quantities.
