Card games are a good way to pass free time or mandatory fun at TIP.

[edit] Egyptian Rat Screw

The seemingly most popular game is ERS, or, Egyptian Rat Screw, also sometimes referred to (out of RC's earshot, of course) as Egyptian Rat F***. The name has little meaning, other than to severely intimidate anyone who has never played before. ERS can be a rather violent game, as you have to slap cards (a bit like SlapJack). It can also get very noisy, as much shouting is induced when you are slapping. 4-6 is the optimal number of people. Wearing a ring is both recommended and loathed. In the past, however, wearing a ring has been totally not allowed.

A TIPster named Daniel Wang pwned everyone at this game at the Davidson Campus during Term II in 2006. Rumors went around that he had "sold his soul to the Devil." This theory (and some others) have never been proven. But that never stopped Money Mallik & Anthony Fernandez from spreading the rumor like wildfire. The devil was pleased.

[edit] A guide to E. R. S.

IF YOU LIKE MY GAME GUIDE TO ERS PLEASE EMAIL ME AT roseviper2002 @ hotmail.com. NO HATERS PLEASE

The meaning of the acronym of this game is unknown to me, but the guess of the people who taught me the game in high school called it Egyptian Rat Screwers. No joke!!!

This game is a super fun and exciting, very fast paced game, and seeing how it is a superb mix of Slap Jack, War, and B.S., it isn’t hard to see why.

The object of the game is to be the player at the end with all 52 cards of a regular playing deck.

The dealer deals all of the cards to the players – (preferably 4-7 players for maximum fun.) Players may not look at or shuffle their cards at all during the entirety of the game. The cards are held in one hand and one player at a time “ Flips Out ” the card quickly on to the center of the table. The person to the right is next in line to play.

Half-Slaps are NOT allowed!

Cards 2-10 are just what I like to refer to as spacers. They are important for doubles, and making a pile larger, but other than that, they are no big deal.

When a player lays down a card, three things may happen.

1. The player will lay down a face card. When this happens, the next person in line needs to try and “ Beat ” that card. The amount of chances a person has to beat a given card is as follows:

• Ace – 4 chances to beat • King – 3 chances to beat • Queen – 2 chances to beat • Jack – 1 chance to beat

IF the face card (or ace, of course) is not beaten then the player who laid down that face card gets the entire pile. If the face card IS beaten, then the next person in line has the opportunity to beat THAT card. IF they fail, the pile goes to the person who laid down the face card they were attempting to beat.

Also, if you run out of cards while trying to beat a card, the player after you must continue trying to beat. If they succeed, the next person has to try to beat their card. If the person fails, the one before you gets the pile.

2. A double is laid down. Suppose Edward lays down a 4. Alice’s turn is next and she lays down a 4 also. This makes a double. Everyone must pay attention to this game because when there are doubles, everyone must slap it. After all the hands are lifted one by one, whoever’s hand is on top of the majority of the cards gets the entire pile. If it appears to be a tie, a quick game of rock paper scissors will settle the debate.

3. A 2-10 after another 2-10 is laid down. This just means the game keeps going to the next person until someone else lays down a face card.

If The Time Comes Where YOU Run Out of Cards……………

Never fear. Stick around the table because if doubles are played, you can do a little maneuver called “Slapping In”!

Flips Out – When a person flips a card over, they MUST do it a certain way to be considered a fair player. The players must flip the card away from them so they cannot see what card it is before it hits the pile on the table. If you flip it quickly enough, there is a chance the other players won’t get a glimpse at the card first as well.

Half-Slaps - If you KNOW that you have doubles in your hand and that the next card is the double to the one you just laid down, you have to lift your hand from the card at least 10 inches before slapping it. Keeping your hand on the card will make it to where no one will win the pile. Remember, slapping is FUN!

Beat – When a player puts down a face card or an ace after another face card or ace was laid down.

Slapping In – Also called “slapping back in”, this is where a player who has run out of cards can be the first to slap a pair of doubles!!!

[edit] Asshole

Another semi-popular game, though more at Davidson than elsewhere, is Asshole (Or in front of RCs, Presidents), not to be confused with the stripping game, President. Asshole is a better group game, though not as exciting and intense as ERS, but does not have a clear endpoint. This makes it better for long periods of empty time, i.e. when the dances are lame. Generally, it is also the game played when people are half asleep, or lack a decent table. Six is the optimal number of people.

[edit] Mao

Amazingly, Mao seems to have escaped this list. I suppose that the reason that is is that it is forbidden to tell the rules of the game to anyone who does not know them. Rules vary from place to place, year to year, and person to person. All that is allowed to be said is this: it is a group game, and the object is to win. Generally, people will give a ruleset they use when beginning play, to try to get people on the same page. One of the more popular rulesets (although people don't always realize it) are the Davidson 2002 rules, which seem to have endured more or less unchanged at Davidson the past few years. Mao is more popular at Davidson than at Duke East.

[edit] Mafia

Yet another card game played at TIP (or at least Duke West '05) is mafia. This is optimal when a large group of people is gathered that a) is sick of ERS b) has too many people to play ERS. In the game of Mafia one (or two) people try to kill all the townspeople, while an angel/doctor tries to save them and a detective investigates. Often at TIP, since TIPsters are so creative, hilarity ensues, either by always killing the same person (grrr) or creating non-TIPropriate/gruesome deaths.

[edit] B.S.

A very popular card game at 2007 A&M term 1. And 2008 Term I. If it ceases to be popular at Texas, we have a problem. Not original, but you can play with up to 8 or 9 people. You basically call out who is full of shit. Nuff Said.

More accurate game rules:

  1. Person puts down Ace of Spades and says "one ace"
  2. Next person puts down twos; than threes, and so on and so forth
  3. Jokers go as anything
  4. If any person playing suspects another player is lying, they merely say "B.S" (or acctualy saying "Bullshit"). If player BS is called on (BSee) is lying, they pick the pile up. If BSee is not lying, person who called BS (BSer) picks pile up.
  5. And so on untill one player (winner) has no cards left. Winner can always call BS and jump back in the game, however. Because of this, certian BS games have been known to last the length of the dance. Or close to.

The king of BS at A&M 08 was Deepok the rc withought an rc group. He was known for his terrible bluffing skills and random outbursts of BS
